It can be especially tempting to purchase a ton of stuff before prepping for your trip, or blow a huge chunk of cash while you are away. Trips are one of those purchases that lead to the need to buy more. You never just pay for a hotel and flight, there are a tons of purchases made before you go away from tanning to a new suitcase or (I really hope not) a brand new iPad so you can watch movies on the flight..

Here are a few tips for keeping costs low (since you already have paid for a flight/hotel or all-inclusive vacation).

Go to Walmart for your pharmacy type products.

I know I did suggest the place that everyone loves to hate, but its often a lot cheaper than Shoppers Drug Mart when your looking for sunscreen (and aloe) and all that other fun stuff.

Dollarstore

You can buy a variety of products for around a $1 or $2. There are airplane neck pillows to a variety of snacks you can bring on the plane.

Also you can grab travel size shampoos/conditioners/moisturizer etc. for cheap

Check Canadian Tire for Bubba's

Yup these are awesome, and I did already post a link the other day on the Facebook page. I'm going to be taking one away with me when I head south and it's relatively inexpensive while keeping your drinks nice and cold.

Take a set amount of money away with you and avoid using your credit cards unless its an emergency

There are also a few things that I hate forgetting;

Sunglasses

Loading up my iPhone with music/movies and other in flight entertainment

Books

Deck of cards and other stuff needed for drinking games

Also just so you don't for get anything, check out Sunwings Trip Checklist (yeah I know it's kind of dated, who brings a camera anymore...)
At the beginning of the school year (or the beginning of the semester) there are a variety of very important things that you need to get done, and forms that need to be filled out all in order for you to de-stress before the real stress comes.

One of the most important things that residents of Ontario should apply for is the 30% of tuition rebate which students don't have to repay. It's approximately $1,680 for university students and $770 for college students both of which are allotted for a full 8-month school year.

For everything you need to know about the 30% of tuition offer for residents of Ontario, click here.

The Ontario government currently has an ad campaign out trying to promote the 30% tuition program.

I honestly think that instead of doing these commercials they should just provide more financial aid to students, but that's not a discussion for this blog...

Am I Eligible?

If your parents make a huge lump sum of money in terms of combined taxable income it is highly unlikely you will be able to take advantage of this.

Final Thoughts

This is money that you can use, while reducing your reliance on loans/lines of credit for a part of your tuition/fees/housing. Take advantage of programs like this that your provincial government offers so you can reduce your post grad debt.

Dabbling in social media; Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+ I've decided to step it up a bit. I'd seen the website before but had been slightly intimidated by the 2-4 posts per week recommendations and the whole idea of the "Yakezie Challenge" and it's 6 month duration.

But here I am, about to start off for the next 6 months trying to further boost the ranking of my blog, build awareness and go from just another hobby to a bit more of a side gig.

Just warning all of you readers that I will be writing more content, helping you more and focusing on what you want to hear most. Doesn't sound like to bad of a deal to me.

So here we go, February 8, 2013 is when I start the Yakezie Challenge. You saw it here first.
But here's the most recent crock pot recipe that I've tried. This one is for Jambalaya which is something I really like whenever I buy it in a restaurant but I've never made it myself.

Overall it was not too bad. I was at work for the whole day and may have left it on too long. I'm not a chef here. The taste was good anyways and I ended up with a bunch of leftovers.
I would definitely suggest trying this one out, it's got a nice kick to it (you can add more hot sauce or red pepper flakes if you want).
I'm not going to be able to find you $15 dollar tickets to Leafs games. No matter how many years in a row they miss the playoffs I'm pretty sure prices wont ever drop that low. BUT there are some great sports events that you can check out on a Friday or weekend that won't break your budget.

Travelzoo
Travelzoo is one of the better websites out there that has some great daily deals/newsletter with their top 20 deals of the week. This week they have a discount on for 3 Toronto Raptors games, the Sunday game tickets are priced as lows $15 each.

Check out this weeks Top 20 here. (There are a lot of hotels/vacations mixed in here)

Ticketmaster Ticket Deals Section
Ticketmaster is your one stop shop for concerts, sporting events and everything else in between. They also happen to have a deals section on their website with below $40 tickets, 2 for 1 ticket deals, tickets under $25 etc.

Check out the website here. Also hockey tickets under $40 here

Daily Deal Sites
Yes I know, it may feel as though I constantly suggest daily deal sites, but there is a reason. Sometimes I agree there is a bunch of crap on these sites, but if you check back enough you can often find some great deals for local sports teams and even your occasional pro sports tickets.

Groupon
Living Social
Team Buy
Wagjag

Check out Local Sports
More than likely if you live close to your university campus you can catch one of the varsity games during the week or on the weekend for relatively little money.
Full schedules for all sports can be found on the CIS website or your individual provinces websites.

OUA
Canada West
RSEQ
AUS

There are also some great options when it comes to semi-pro/major junior sports teams. In terms of hockey there are a variety of major junior leagues including the OHL-with teams in usually smaller cities (which often works out well for those that go to university in smaller towns/cities).

CHL-Check out individual provinces/regions websites for team/ticket info
For those that are responsible when it comes to credit card's there are some great ways to take advantage of the perks that come with having one.

One rule that I like to follow is don't make purchases just so you can get the rewards. Charge things like your rogers bill that are necessary and you have the cash to pay them off. You can take advantage of the points for these types of purchases instead of paying for them with cash/interact etc.

Master Card-Priceless Toronto
Unfortunately or fortunately for some the Mastercard priceless program is available in Toronto only. All Mastercard holders can take advantage of these deals including discounted premium Leafs tickets, Raptors tickets, savings at restaurants, stores and many more. Check out the site to take advantage of some of these deals.

BMO Airmiles Mastercards
Of course I have a bit of a bias towards Airmiles Mastercards but there are some great ways to accumulate additional points. Check out airmilesshops.ca , login with your airmiles card and double dip on points by using Airmiles shops promo's and using your Mastercard to pay. I'm currently saving miles up for a flight to California or Europe.

Other Loyalty Programs (these are for zero annual fee cards)
TD Canada Trust-TD Rewards
RBC- Shoppers Optimum points or RBC rewards points
Scotiabank-Scene points
BMO-Airmiles
CIBC-Petropoints

Discounts
Certain credit cards, including the card that I currently have can give you discounts through the SPC discount program. Check out the website for your credit card to see if there are any discounts that you qualify for.

Travel/Car Rental Insurance
Most Visa/Mastercard cardholders have travel insurance built into their credit cards or can easily purchase are affordable insurance options for travel or car rentals. Travel agencies and car rental companies often try to gouge you when it comes to insurance options. Call your credit card company or check out their website to see what is offered in terms of insurance..or what you already have.

If you don't have a credit card and want to check out some of the options for students view one of my posts here.

We all know a few years ago how much couponing in the United States blew up. And if you didn't congrats I'm kind of jealous you didn't have to hear about it. There were women out there who managed to pay about $6 for a $200 grocery bill or something ridiculous like that...only in the US.

Now for the less crazy people out there who don't want to be carrying around a folder full of coupons or basically fill their basement like a personal grocery store...there are less drastic savings options.

What I'm here to tell you is that you can't find a few coupons here and there and save a few bucks. We don't need to develop our own store room of food, but by following a few tips and checking out the following websites you can save some money...without being crazy.

First off check out my coupon page which has some of the better websites out there for coupons that can be printed or directly mailed to you.

These are some of the best websites out there in terms of coupons

Also check out a previous post I put together on how Facebook can save you money.

Make sure to like these pages on Facebook. Basically you will get a variety of contests, offers as well as coupons for sometimes free product right to your newsfeed.

Keep coupons in your wallet-the amount of times I've forgotten coupons is annoying and then I end up not saving as much

Double up coupons on top of sale prices, it helps you save even more

If you are printing coupons make sure your grocery store accepts printable one's. Some store's are coming around to the idea of printable coupons (fraud was one of the main concerns previously).

Also here's a little gift from me..for all those ice cream lovers.

Chapman's $5 Coupon Offer

All you have to do is click on the link above and write in the comment area that you would like to request the $5 coupon from Chapman's and then they mail it to you. Simple as that.

Oh and then double up the coupon with sale prices and you've got yourself a pretty sweet deal.

I'm sure you're wondering, what does this have to do with Cheap Students? And it's one of those things that indirectly relates to the theme here, which is, making food in a crock pot is easy, and can be made in large quantities which will lead to you spending less at fast-food restaurants and the meals can be frozen and heated up another day. What could students not like about cheap and easy meals?

Pinterest has been the source of most of my inspiration when it comes to interesting food ideas. Some looked absolutely disgusting and I stayed far far away from those.

Here's the first recipe I tried. It was actually pretty good, I'm not usually a fan of homemade mac and cheese but this one was good.

Add the drained macaroni and stir again.
4 Cook on low for 2 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.
So I mostly followed this recipe except for a few things

Cooked noodles (I used rice pasta instead) for 6minutes and then drained

Sprayed the pot lightly with spray oil

Turned my 3-qt Crock Pot on High & melted the butter &cheese

Was not completely
melted when other ingredients were added

Turned the pot to Low.

Whisked all the other
ingredients in a separate bowl first before adding them to the pot.

In
this order: 1 beaten egg, sour cream, spices (mustard, salt, pepper), cheddar soup,
1% milk.

Added the noodles last.

Was definitely ready to eat in 1 1/2 hours.

Stirred it
often.

When you think of budgeting, and saving money (I hope you do anyways) the first thing that comes to mind is not whether or not you successfully pass all of your courses at school. Unfortunately though it is something to consider when picking elective's (those can be killers sometimes), and your course load for the semester. Tuition is normally considered a fixed cost that doesn't change dramatically over the 4 years (or 5 or 6..) that you are completing your undergrad. But if you fail a course or take a lighter course load there may be a bigger hit on your budget than you would have thought.

These examples use the Ontario averages for tuition across all majors from 2009-2013
(4-year undergraduate degree)

An individual who takes a full course load every semester and passes all of their classes.

2009/2010-$5,985 per year (10 courses)
2010/2011-$6,316 per year (10 courses)
2011/2012-$6,815 per year (10 courses)
2012/2013-$7,180 per year (10 courses)

In tuition alone this student would pay about $26,296.

An individual who takes a full course load each semester but failed 1 course in first year

Based on the first calculation lets just assume that 1 course costs about $600 by dividing the total tuition for year 1 by 10.

2009/2010-$5,985 per year (10 courses) Add failed course here= extra $600. $6,585
2010/2011-$6,316 per year (10 courses)
2011/2012-$6,815 per year (10 courses)
2012/2013-$7,180 per year (10 courses)

Ideally the student would take the course during the summer to avoid pushing graduation further and would pay an extra $600 over the course of their undergraduate degree. Totally approximately $26,896
Essentially paying for the course twice to pass it once.

You can see how this can start to add up especially if the student fails more than 4 courses. That's an extra $2,400 and not a single summer free of school.

If you don't take a full course load

In addition if you don't take a full course load, say 4 courses a semester most schools will charge you the full tuition rate. The breakdown would be as follows if you took 4 courses a semester instead of 5.

2009/2010-$5,985 per year (8 courses)
2010/2011-$6,316 per year (8 courses)
2011/2012-$6,815 per year (8 courses)
2012/2013-$7,180 per year (8 courses)
2013/2014-$7,180 per year (i'll be kind and assume that tuition didn't rise but I'm sure it will)

By not taking a full course load you essentially have to pay a full years tuition or about $7,180 and you also run the risk of further extending your undergrad or taking summer courses for another $600 a course if you don't pass all of your courses.

Do you see where this all starts adding up?

A 4-year undergraduate program with all courses passed would cost around $26,296 (if they started in the 2009/2010 school year)

A 4-year undergraduate program where a student failed 1 course would cost around $26,896 (if they started in the 2009/2010 school year)

Technically a 5-year undergraduate stay where a student took 4 courses a semester would cost over $34,000 (if they started in the 2009/2010 school year)

I believe some schools as least only charge you on a per course basis when you are taking 3 courses and under (this makes you a part-times student. Thus it will save you some money here and there.

It's important to be careful when you pick courses and keep track of the courses you failed. It may make more sense for you take a full course load especially if money is tight. I believe it's something that most people don't think about so I hope this post has opened some eyes.
There are a few online retailers out there that offer prices here and there as well as different perks in terms of shipping, rewards points etc.

Chapters/Indigo

Rewards program: Plum Rewards

Shipping: Free Shipping on orders $25 or more

Pricing: Reasonable (compared to the cover prices they charge in store anyways)

Tips: Make sure to check out the bargain books section on the site as well as in-store and online deals.

Verdict: Use plum rewards for the discount and the free wi-fi, unless you buy a lot of books the accumulated points system really isn't work your time. Returns are easier since you can return products in store anywhere in Canada.

Amazon

Rewards program: Rewards Visa (I'm not even going provide a link, you don't need an Amazon Visa)

Shipping: Free Shipping on orders $25 or more (can't be from a seller on Amazon, must be a product sold directly from Amazon Canada)

Pricing: For books, usually a bit better than Chapters

Tips: Check out the Bestseller deals here

Verdict: Amazon provides a lot of selection (aside from books as well) and slightly better prices than Chapters. They don't offer a rewards program but the discounts themselves are worth it to go shop online. Better/more reviews are on Amazon simply because there are more users.

Overall:

Both websites are great in terms of well priced books compared to buying in-store where you often will pay full price for books (unless they are best sellers). The Plum rewards program often has offers and deals and once you gather at least 2,500 points you can get $5 off (you have to be buying a lot of books). Both work well and often for books you are highly unlikely to return them so return policies aren't as vital.

So for all of my readers that live in Toronto you definitely need to make sure you check out Winterlicious. Running between January 25-February 7th 2013 there are a variety of restaurants that take part and provide most often a relatively inexpensive meal.

How does Winterlicious work?

Basically an assortment of restaurants within the city of Toronto develop prix fixe menu's for Lunch, Dinner or both between $15-$25 for Lunch and $25-$45 for Dinner. Choose the restaurant you want to go to, make sure to make a reservation and then your good to go.

Check out of few of these more popular places that you have heard of.

Bier Market- $20 Lunch & $35 Dinner

Drake Hotel- $20 Lunch & $35 Dinner

Spice Route- $15 Lunch & $25 Dinner

If those don't interest you, you can check out the other 188 restaurants available here

Before booking make sure to check out Yelp.com to make sure the restaurants have good ratings.

Also make sure to book early since spots often fill up quickly.

Overall it's a great idea for a possible cheap date, or a great night out with friends instead of going to your standard chain restaurant. All of the prix fixe menu's come with an appetizer, entree and dessert as well which is always nice, because I know as a student I usually opt out of dessert and an app because I know I can't afford it.

It's definitely a product that doesn't fit within the Cheap Student lifestyle.

When you aren't able to snag a container on sale or with a coupon try to make some yourself for a lot less.

Here's a recipe I have used before, and if strained enough can also be used as a yogurt cheese type spread. A tip. Warn your roommates what your contraption in the fridge is, one of my roommates may have gotten a really nasty yogurt drippings surprise one time, it didn't end well..

\

What you need;

A small strainer

A container of plain yogurt, for healthier options choose organic or fat free versions

Cheesecloth, or for broke students a few sheets length of paper towel. (you may be able to find cheesecloths from Dollarama though)

A decent size bowl (to catch the drippings, yeah I know its nasty, but its just moisture so don't be scared)

What to do.

Line your strainer with the doubled or tripled paper towel sheet.

Place the strainer so it can drain into the bowl (you don't want your straining yogurt sitting inside the liquid that dripped out of it).

Once the strainer is set up and ready to go in the bowl, scoop a large amount of plain yogurt so it sits in the middle of the paper towel within the strainer.

Cover the strainer with some paper towel

Now put the contraption into the fridge and let the magic happen. The longer you wait the more moisture drains from the yogurt and the thicker it gets. About every 8 hours or so squeeze the "ball" of yogurt to remove moisture and replace the paper towel, and empty the bowl filled with moisture.

For some added flavour you can add spices (maybe some cinnamon?), or garlic powder and herbs (if you want to make it into a spread). I'm going to try a few combinations and will definitely post photo's and reviews when I do.

Once its at your desired thickness. Add honey, berries or anything else you normally eat greek yogurt with.

It will literally cost you the container of plain yogurt and maybe the paper towel and a new small strainer from Dollarama if you don't have one already.

Plain yogurt is usually on sale and about 2 dollars for a large tub (or less). The amount of "Greek" yogurt you can get out of it is worth your money and even if it takes a little bit of time and effort.

Hope this helps!

I decided as part of the new way I was going to write on this blog was to make things succinct, to the point and easy for readers to follow. So here are some general things that I think about when I go to the grocery store.

Purchase generic brand or private label products instead of name brand foods

Yes I know everyone thinks the No Name brand tastes like crap, but that's exactly what they want you to think because of the millions they spend on branding each year. What's often the case is the same company that produces private label/no name food often has their own name brand product or is the name brand product you always buy just minus the flashy packaging.

Purchase full fruit instead of cut up packaged versions

Please don't be extremely lazy. You can buy a full pineapple for $1 on sale at No Frills or pre cut pineapple for almost $3-$5. Oh and fruit trays are extremely expensive too, so please don't buy them.

Buy a big bag of regular carrots, peel and cut them. It will turn out to be a lot cheaper than the $2-3 dollar bag of baby carrots.

Check out this site on how to cut an avocado, pineapple and mango, because yes I know they are annoying to cut.

Buy in Bulk

For the most part, buying in bulk will save you money. This is often the case with meat products. Of course your thinking, I don't need 8 chicken breasts. Well eventually you do. Buy ziploc bags and bag up the meat in meal size portions and you have meat for a while and you've saved by buying in bulk and probably getting it on sale as well.

You can also buy yourself a really large piece of pork and cut your own pork chops and once again bag them in individual portions. Check out the video here

Don't Buy in Bulk

Yup I know, I'm contradicting myself, but there are situations where buying in bulk may not be your cheapest option. Costco is one example. It's really important to know your prices when you go to Costco because some products aren't that cheap, it just seems cheap because its a massive box. A few products I have found at Costco that are a great deal is Liberte Greek Yogurt, 2 Tubs for about you $7.50 I believe, or 3kg of Oatmeal for $7 approximately as well. Know your prices and you will be fine

Also when using coupons it actually makes more sense to purchase smaller formats of the products and use more coupons. Instead of saving $0.50 on a $4 item, buy the smaller format at $2 and save more if you are using multiple coupons on multiple smaller formats.

Don't Go For Variety

I've learned this the hard way. I thought I was going to be a gourmet chef and would make a variety of meals all the time. And of course I didn't finish a bunch of food I purchased, it went bad and all the ingredients cost me quite a lot more. If you stick to a few staples and go for less variety you end up spending less and using it up without dumping half of it in the garbage. Your a student not a chef.

Also another tip when you really need to buy something and it's not on sale, make sure to check the unit price of the product which is often in grams or kg.

This is a great way to compare 2 products and determine which is less expensive based on the cost per oz, lb, g or kg. A product that costs. $0.263 per oz is cheaper than a product that costs about $0.5 per oz
Here are some tips and tricks on how to sublet your room in order to save some money when you aren't living in your home. Make sure to also speak with your landlord before you start thinking about posting an ad, your landlord may not want subletters at all which could prevent you from doing so.

Posting your ad
Make sure to choose a classified site that a large proportion of your student body frequents. This could be a school affiliated classified site, or by using kijiji and craigslist. It's also a great option to consider posting a listing within the Facebook group you joined with all the other members of your graduating class.

When posting your ad its really important to include the following information;

General location

Distance to the school and the closest bus stop

Which buses/subways take you to the school

Amenities available ie. kitchen, laundry, parking etc.

Efficiency of heating etc.

Rental price per month

Specify if utilities are included

How many other rooms are in the house

If you have a preference include student, male or female etc.

Dates the sublet is available

And Contact Information!

Screening potential candidates
An important thing that may slip your mind at first is the compatibility that the candidate has with your current roommates. It's important to ask a few questions like, why are you subletting? Are you a university student?
The more easy going an individual is, the more likely they will fit in with a group of strangers. It's important to choose subletters at your own discretion and you may even want to request a reference from their previous landlord if you're really unsure. It's also a bad sign when you get an extremely sketchy response to the initial posting, it may be a sign that that individual should just be off the list immediately.

Setting up viewings
Communicate with possible subletters through whatever means necessary and set up viewings of your room. I know I'm a messy person, everyone tells me that, but you need to pretend like your a real estate agent selling a house. Make sure your room looks amazing, it's going to be a much easier sell. Make sure to have information on hand about the type of heating system, the average monthly utility costs etc. These are questions that subletters will ask.

Finalizing the deal
Always make sure you form a contract with a sublet.

You can use a template like the link below
http://studentlife.uoguelph.ca/sites/uoguelph.ca.ocl/files/SubletAgreement08.pdf

Also it's important to determine a payment plan in terms of both utilities and monthly rent, which should be included within your contract. The safer the better, and in most cases it's a great idea to request post dated cheques as well as the last months rent in order to confirm that the subletter will actually pay you. Make sure to contact your landlord and let them know that an individual has been confirmed as a sublet.
Provide the subletter with e-mails or some other contact information so they can get in touch with their future roommates if need be (this is optional).
Unfortunately one of the reasons why students struggle with money and in turn debt after university is the lack of planning and often crazy spending habits throughout the year.

One of the objectives I hope to achieve with this blog this year is to further develop content that is more specific to help students really save money, it's been about a year and I hope to continue to offer unique and helpful content to university students.

Some things students should remember over the next year;

Despite how irritating budgeting can be develop some sort of one budget or make use of online resources to do so.

Review your previous spending habits from last year and get a good idea on what you did well and what categories had your highest amounts of spending. These are the places you can work on, or continue to excel in in order to save more money in 2013

Start thinking about summer jobs, yah I know its a jerk move on my part to even start mentioning that

Figure out how much money you will have to spend on tuition, books and other school related expenses and figure out employment accordingly. Do you need extra cash? Maybe find a part time job for next semester.

Do you want to try and reduce spending on credit and paying bills in full?

Long Term

These are some goals that need to be measurable, make sure that they are even possible as well. These goals could be related to a variety of topics

Amount of money you hope to have in your savings account by a certain date

When you want to start paying off your student loans and within what amount of time

It's important to set goals, both long and short, I know personally as a student I tend to think much more day to day, which leads to surprises at the end of the month when you look at both your chequing account, savings account or your mastercard/visa bill. January is the time where everyone reflects on their year and tries to improve for the new year. Make sure your not one of those people that flakes out on their resolutions, it may not seem as important now, but once you graduate you might wish you had of kept your finances on track.

Christmas is now in less than a week and for most of us we finished shopping for Christmas presents. Despite my best efforts to complete all of my Christmas shopping, the 3 weeks of exams and final projects don't tend to seem like real life, and once your out its almost Christmas. So for those who are still haven't purchased everything they need, here are some great ideas, some of which don't even need to be shipped. For the most part I like to completely avoid malls since you end up spending about 30 minutes trying to find a spot.

Magazine Subscription
http://www.rogersmagazineservice.com/
Check out Rogers Magazine service for great deals on magazine subscriptions and you Air Miles and Aeroplan members can also get bonuses for purchasing subscriptions.

Amazon.ca
*Note today is the last day forty of free super saving shipping to arrive before Christmas
Buy a wide variety of products and purchase over the $25 to get free shipping as well.
Make sure to check out their Top Holiday Deals section but make sure to check that the products are available once they are in your cart.

Chapters
*Use the ship to store function to go and pick up your purchase, ship to home for the holiday's is no longer available
Purchase books at much cheaper prices than in the store, and sign up for plum rewards to save more. Also you can purchase a variety of home decor products, stationary including Moleskin notebooks for friends that love to write and keep notes in something pretty.

Futureshop
For those who love technology, as of today there are 3 days left for ground shipping and it's free for orders over $20.
For items like DVD's and box sets you may be able to find a better deal at Amazon, check your prices. It's often better to buy from Futureshop for electronics since you can go in store whenever there are problems or issues with the product and returns are much easier as well.

Groupon/Team Buy/Living Social/Wag Jag
Make sure to check out all of these sites certificates to redeem the gift are available once the daily deal ends, so keep that in mind. But these gifts are simple don't require any shipping and for those who hate wrapping can be put inside a Christmas card. These gifts can be anything from trips to manicures and pedicures

Manicure/Pedicure/Spa Treatments from a local spa
This something you can pick up as long as the location is open, but it's highly unlikely you will be waiting in line or fighting anyone for a parking spot, plus this is usually a great gift for your mom.

LCBO/Liquor Store
Another great idea and something I've done in the past is buying someone's favourite liquor, and you can often purchase these in gift sets as well. There's also the option of picking a variety of unique Christmas beers and it's something that you know they will love and can even consume on Christmas. Check out the LCBO's Gift Finder guide http://www.lcboholiday.com/gift_finder

Baking
Even if you aren't the greatest baker in the world, baking cookies and decorating them yourself and then packaging them up nicely is a great personalized present that is also easy on the budget. Check out Pinterest for some great baking ideas as well as just simply searching google or checking out Kraft Kitchens as well http://www.kraftrecipes.com/recipes/dessert/main.aspx
This post will focus on the following options that includes;

Daily Deals

Places you never thought of

Coupons
I know most people associate coupons with crazy ladies that are addicted to cutting coupons and show up on reality tv shows. But it's important to note that it's not a bad thing to whip out a coupon here and there especially when its going to save you some money. A great website to check out is BeFrugal.com where you can sign up and then print off coupons for restaurants. Another great tip is to sign up for the newsletters of your favourite chain restaurants where they often send you emails with deals and promotions that you can use at their restaurants.

Daily Deals
Websites like Groupon.com are great websites where you can get coupons and savings for chain restaurants as well as local restaurants. Check out these sites often and you can even sign up for their newsletters to make sure you get the most up to date deals.
This section was one of the main reasons why I wanted write a post covering this topic. Going to the University of Guelph myself I realized that there was a great restaurant on campus as part of our Hotel and Tourism program. This restaurant is run by students and is part of their curriculum which leads to fairly good meals and really inexpensive prices.

It's almost that time of year when students have to start searching around for a rental home, and it's especially important to plan ahead. The earlier students start to look for rentals the better, since the best and often most affordable rental homes tend to disappear closer to the beginning of January. Unfortunately the time when students should be searching for a rental is right during exams for the fall semester or the first few weeks of school in January.

When searching for a house to rent check out websites like these;
Kijiji-Always a great option, and a variety of properties are posted on here
Craigslist-I know in the Guelph area, less are posted on craigslist, but it still is a great option
University classified website- At the University of Guelph thecannon.ca is an excellent website to find student rentals

There are often other websites where you can find rentals and these can often be found simply by searching on Google

Make sure to act quickly when you find a rental ad online that you are interested in. The best advice is to call the personal who has listed the rental, you will get a quicker response and get priority over those who emailed simply because people don't check their emails as frequently.

Some things to think about when looking at a rental

Are utilities included? If they aren't you need to consider the following;

Is the heating electric or gas? You want gas since it's more efficient which means cheaper bills

Check out my article on saving money on cable & internet to reduce those costs

Ask when toilets and other water usage appliances function, if they have been recently replaced etc. You don't want toilets that run, it will burn through cash quickly.

Also check out this article from Learnvest

http://www.learnvest.com/2012/10/how-much-will-i-pay-in-utilities-for-my-rental/

For those that only need a 4 month rental, those coming back for only a half semester etc.

Make sure to check out sublets, they are often excellent and cheaper alternatives than locking into a lengthy lease that you don't need. Often sublets are cheaper, have the flexibility of not being locked into a lease and sometimes have the benefit of utilities being included.Cheap Studentshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07004408889453001005noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6595014230018778713.post-55708617409119548332012-11-16T23:37:00.004-05:002012-11-21T00:24:04.159-05:00Black Friday Canadian Style

For those that don't know, Black Friday is an American tradition of sorts where stores hold sales with heavy discounts and bargains on the Friday of American thanksgiving. I don't really understand the concept, since Thanksgiving should be a time spent with family instead of fighting people for the newest Elmo, but hey to each their own. We thankfully are now able to benefit from these deals as Canadian retailers are fighting to prevent Canadian shoppers from heading across the border for American deals. Black Friday falls on November 23rd this year.

Check out the hours for malls near year, but it has been reported that Cadillac Fairview malls in Canada will be opening early on Black Friday with the Eaton's Centre opening at 6am while 8 other Cadillac malls will be opening at 7am.

One of my favourite websites (that I have been neglecting lately) is Red Flag Deals. They have a section specifically covering Black Friday. Check out that section of their website here. This not only covers Black Friday deals but Cyber Monday deals as well (predominantly online sales).

Black Friday is a great time to stock up on Christmas presents so it's definitely something you should keep in mind.

Make sure to check the Red Flag Deals page, its a great source for Black Friday sales and promotions and is updated quite frequently. I will also be retweeting deals on Twitter so make sure follow @cheapstudents
I started to realize this year especially that more than 50% of the money I take with me downtown ends up going towards post bar food. This covers everything from poutine to pita pit. I'm not recommending not eating after a night out, because it definitely helps. Instead I'm of course going to talking about a way to lower these costs so you can buy more alcohol or save some cash for your next night out.

So here are a few options for a nice post bar snack that can save you some money and ease the morning hangover.

Grilled Cheese
A serious classic, with a nice mix of carbs and grease and it's easy to make. The less intricate the cooking the better is what always works the best. Go with a basic cheese and bread or add meat, tomatoes, veggies or whatever else works for you.

Nachos
Now these can be made with tortilla chips or crackers if you have them (triscuits often work well too). You can either grate cheese or just cut it up. Throw on some salsa and put it in the microwave for a minute or so.

Mac and cheese
Always a classic option post bar. It's hard to mess up, just try to avoid burning yourself. If your scared just buy kd cups instead, just add water and nuke them throw in the cheese mix.

Mini pizzas
You can make these with any sort of bread but the best options are with English muffins or pitas. Either grate or slice cheese, and use pasta sauce or pizza sauce, whatever you have on hand. Either microwave or put it in the oven to cook. You can add toppings including cold cuts, pepperoni or vegetables. Whatever you have lying around works.

Pasta with Red Sauce or Pesto
Boil up some pasta and then once your done just dump in pesto or red sauce from the fridge and stir, easy and tasty.

I hope these help you save some cash and ease those morning hangovers.

For those who like to plan ahead. You can always save some leftovers from dinner or make something awesome to heat up late at night.

I had previously stuck to chain restaurants or cooked at home, with the cooking at home always being a great cheap alternative. But I realized I wanted something more, and there definitely is a great way to do it without spending a ton of money (and local restaurants are most often cheaper or have better food at a comparable price to chains). I'm sure many people can relate, but just for another city. I feel almost the same way when it comes to places I've tried out in Toronto (where I'm originally from).

So the only real option was to start testing out local non-chain restaurants within the city and there were a few ways that I did it, and the first, mobile apps will be covered in this post.

There are quite a few mobile apps that are great sources of information in order to find restaurants you may never have heard of and/or find out reviews for the restaurants in order to make a better restaurant choice.

Urban Spoon- Has a list of top picks, restaurants that are highly rated in your city (based on your location) as well as a break down of restaurants by price. With a section called "Cheap Eats"

Street Food App- If you have an interest in something different than a restaurant, check out the Street Food App, which provides food truck locations for Boston, Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver. Choose your app based on the city you live.

Foursquare- It may not be the first thing you think of when someone suggests food. But foursquare is an excellent source for recommendations as well as check in deals when going to some restaurants. Some restaurants even offer special bonuses for location mayors.

Yelp-Check out this app for restaurant reviews as well, similar to Urban Spoon.

Groupon- and other daily deal sites. You can download the app, or check out their websites but you can often find great deals for local restaurants by purchasing daily deals.

By checking out these free apps you are able to find deals as well as discover new restaurants and read reviews to get the best bang for your buck.
